MVHS Traffic & Pedestrian Improvements

Project Overview

In May 2019, the City Council approved Planning Case #18-014 for building and site improvements at Mounds View High School. City Council approval included conditions that the School District perform a traffic and pedestrian study and implement safety measures to address the significant increase in pedestrian crossings of Lake Valentine Road by students using the parking lot north of the school building.

The traffic and pedestrian study determined twelve recommended improvements along Lake Valentine Road adjacent to the school.

Project Timeline

November 3: Lake Valentine Road was striped last week and is open to traffic. Students should no longer be parking on the side streets, because the parking lot is fully open.

September 22: The Contractor will be returning to mill and overlay that segment of Lake Valentine Road in the latter half of October for final wear.

September 06: The Contractor will be returning to mill and overlay the segment of Lake Valentine Road that was closed in late August during the latter half of October. All self-performed patch work by Arden Hills on Lake Valentine Road was completed on Monday and Tuesday of last week.

August 31: Krause Anderson's two week, detoured closure of Lake Valentine Road was taken down at the end of the day 8/24/22 and is fully opened again to vehicle traffic.

August 23, 2022: Currently there are two closures that affect the neighborhoods around Lake Valentine Road. These closures are due to the Mounds View High School and Ramsey County improvement projects. The estimated completion for the Mounds View High School construction is Friday, 8/26 at which time traffic will open in both directions. The Ramsey County project on Old Snelling is estimated to be completed by Thursday, 8/25 with both lanes open. The road will reopen on the weekend of 8/27-28 to ease traffic congestion. For questions or more information regarding the Ramsey County’s construction please contact Ramsey County Public Works at 651-266-7100.

Starting Monday 8/29, Lake Valentine Rd will be closed near Valentine Park. To access Old Snelling, traffic will need to travel through Valentine Avenue. This closure is expected to last through Friday, 9/2. Access the map below for more information or contact Public Works at 651-792-7847 with additional questions.

August 19:  Krause Anderson has implemented a two week, detoured closure of Lake Valentine Road. Crews will do the bulk of the heavy construction operations in the closed street from August 11-25. City staff told the Mounds View High School staff and contractor to update local residents directly with details of the closure.

August 4: The upcoming closure of Lake Valentine Road at Mounds View High School will be delayed another three days beginning August 11 and concluding August 25. The closure will extend from west of the bridge that crosses 35W to Janet Court on Lake Valentine Road. Advanced Warning Signs have been placed on Lake Valentine Road to increase awareness of the upcoming closure. Find more information about the project at www.cityofardenhills.org/1008/

Project Status to Date

July 13: See the paragraph under "Project Timeline" for the latest information.

March 30: Pedestrian safety is of the utmost importance to Arden Hills' leadership. The goal of this project on Lake Valentine Road in front of MVHS is to make the street safer for students. Construction is scheduled for summer 2022 after school is out and will be completed before the beginning of the 2022-2023 academic year. A main feature of the new design is the inclusion of center concrete medians that enhance the effectiveness of the signalized crosswalk.
